About Goldenberg Furniture

In 1904 three Goldenberg brothers opened a used furniture store at 103 W. Mt. Vernon Street, where the present center store building is located. Teddy Roosevelt was President and it was the decade before World War I. Abe Goldenberg's two brothers left Somerset soon thereafter to open stores in Parkersburg, West Virginia. In 1908 Abe married Pauline Lerner of Danville, Kentucky and together they worked to buy the old storefront. They borrowed funds in 1912 to construct the 3 story 103 W. Mt. Vernon building and slowly evolved from used to new merchandise.

After graduating from the University of Kentucky and 4 years in WWII their son, Jack, joined Goldenberg Furniture. The store grew and an adjacent lot was purchased to build a 4 story warehouse and showroom building in the early 1950's during the time of the Korean War. When 1st National Bank merged with Farmers National Bank the former's building was added to the complex and expanded the showroom to Somerset's Public Square. Upgrading merchandise from WWII on was a priority until Goldenberg's became synonymous for the best selection of furniture and accessories in over 6400 square miles.

In the late 1960's, Jack's daughter and son in law joined the business after graduating from Stephens College and University of Missouri, respectively. Goldenberg's then started an expansion phase that eventually saw stores in Cincinnati, Radcliff, Kentucky, and Corbin, Kentucky. Goldenberg's currently operates two stores: the original store in Somerset with over 50,000 square feet and Goldenberg's in Corbin's Trademart Center.

In May 2002, Jan and Steve's son Jeremy returned to Somerset after ten years in the Information Technology arena, leaving a Directorship in a Midwest regional Internet Service Provider. A new wave of growth and modernization has started with his return.
